Rules

Play is governed by sections 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and Appendix 1 of the official IIHF rulebook.

Main rule
No body checking

Anything the referee interprets as a CHECK will be called a major penalty: 5 penalty minutes, and the team plays with 4 for that time.

IIHF rulebook
  • The Cup is played Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9–11.
  • 6 teams split into 2 groups of 3.
  • Group A: Pelicans Menor, Cancún Butchers, Puebla · Group B: Ice Eagles, León, Pequeñines.
  • Crossover group stage: each Group A team plays all 3 Group B teams, never a team from its own group. Even so, the standings are by group: each team is ranked only against its own group, based on its results against the other one.
  • The top 2 in each group advance to the semifinals: 1st A vs 2nd B and 1st B vs 2nd A.
  • The semifinal winners play the championship final. There is no 3rd-place game.
  • The 3rd-place teams in each group play the 3rd vs 3rd so every team plays 4 games. It doesn’t count toward the standings or team awards and it can end in a tie; it does count toward tournament stats, but not toward individual awards.
  • The Zamboni resurfaces the ice before every game.
  • Neck guards are mandatory.
  • Food trucks available for players.
  • Results and schedule at lakesidecup.mexican.hockey.
  • 3 points for a win.
  • 1 point for a tie.
  • 0 points for a loss.
